Meghalaya in Monsoon: Is It Worth the Trip?

Meghalaya in Monsoon: Is It Worth the Trip?

Cherrapunji — Sohra to locals — holds the record for some of the highest annual rainfall anywhere on Earth. If you're planning a Meghalaya trip from South or West India and your travel window lands between June and September, the monsoon question comes up in almost every call we get. Here's the honest answer.

What monsoon actually looks like on the ground

It rarely rains all day, every day. The typical pattern is heavy showers in bursts, with clear or overcast stretches in between — often the best light for photography happens right after a downpour, when the waterfalls are at their fullest and the air is clean. Living root bridges, Nohkalikai Falls and Seven Sisters Falls are genuinely at their most dramatic in this window.

Where it changes our route

  • Dawki river boating — the famously clear water at Dawki turns murky after heavy upstream rain. We check conditions day-of and swap in extra time at Mawlynnong if needed.
  • Mawsynram side trips — some of the more remote root bridge treks get muddy and are best skipped by non-trekkers in peak monsoon.
  • Hill roads — our drivers slow down and build in buffer time on the Guwahati–Shillong stretch; this is exactly why we run this route in a Tempo Traveller or Urbania rather than a sedan, for the extra ground clearance and stability.

Who should still book this window

If waterfalls and greenery are the main draw, monsoon (June–September) is arguably the best time to see Meghalaya at its most spectacular. If you specifically want Dawki's clear-water boating as the centrepiece, we'd steer you toward October–March instead.

What we recommend packing

  • A proper rain jacket over an umbrella — hill winds make umbrellas impractical
  • Quick-dry clothing and a dry bag for electronics
  • Grippy, closed footwear for the root bridge walks
